African masks

Had a short sketching session at the awesome Rietberg collection. Drew two african masks. Beautiful and alien shapes.

Had problems to keep the proportions/shapes between the different views consisten and had false starts with the first mask. For some reason, I could not get consistent shadows/lighting on the second one.. This was my first visit at the museum but I will definitely come back. They have a lot of interesting things to draw.

  1. You definitely captured it. The statue and mask look spectacular. I like how you went the extra mile with the shading: way beyond the formulaic form, fill and core applied at the standard angle. Very cool!

  2. Thanks Dmitri.Believe it or not, the second object is also listed as a mask. A huge mask!

  3. Is it a mask or more like a hat? If it's a mask, how does it go on the face? Looks very cool

  4. I think you wear it like an hat but most of your face is covered. The german description was "Aufsatzmaske" but no native german speaker could explain it to me what it means. ;)

  5. What a coincidence! I visited the Rietberg Museum too and did some sketches from the same mask. http://tmblr.co/ZKZ-twho3uxt (2nd image)
