Animal Drawing Week 6

Skipped week 5, could not complete the homework. Week 6 was about putting everything together and try to push the sketches to the finish. I have to say I am always very reluctant to do that, since I dont have fundamentals solid enough and rendering a weak drawing is like putting lipstick on a pig. But here you go, I did again a series on live cows.

These cows are a bit weird looking, but if you compare with my first attempts long time ago (for dynamic sketching 2), it's still a progress.

*update* here is a screenshot from the video feedback from Jon, the instructor. I really like how he pointed out the missing planes on the cow face..

  1. Well lipstick on a pig or eyeliner on a cow i think that they look great! And if i may, i must say that the left foot correction on top cow doesn't really seem justified (obviously i'm certainly missing the point of your assignment involving the addition of some dynamic/lively effects)...but anyhow what a great class to get that kind of feedback!

    1. Thanks! Yeah the instructor is very helpful, he spends between 5 and 10 minutes per student which is a good average compared to other course I had. But well, you around 800$ for 8 weeks so it's not exactly cheap. So far I am quite happy, I didn't draw as much as I would have liked but I think I learned the basics of a systematic approach to animal drawing I intend to work on in the coming months. We'll see! ;)

  2. Excellent sketches, louisC! It's funny: my character design instructor was making the same exact corrections to my sketches. It's amazing how much you can get away with perspective when doing environments, but not so much with characters and creatures.

    1. Thanks! Yeah, but on the other hand, too much perspective and construction and your sketch look stiff (look at the stuff from Feng Zug, perspective is impressive but his organic stuff has no soul). It's a very difficult balance to find I think.

  3. Yes, for sure. I had this problem until Mike Mattesi helped me resolve it. He taught me how to keep everything fluid while maintaining accurate perspective.

    main site: http://www.drawingforce.com/
    his class sign-up: http://www.drawingforce.com/index.cfm/store/#!/~/category/id=6327782&offset=0&sort=normal

He usually has Force Drawing available, but this quarter it's anatomy through his Force approach.

You can send him an email and ask him if he could help you solve your perspective vs fluid structure problem if you take his anatomy class: he's very approachable and passionate about teaching good drawing skills.

He's also one of the best (and favorite) instructors I ever had. I suspect he will be able to help you.

    3. Cool! did you read the book from Scott Robertson, "How to draw"? Because this is really the only book that explain how to draw freehand perspective.

    1. Thank you! I followed course at cgma http://2d.cgmasteracademy.com/. Dynamic Sketching with Peter Han was definitely the most helpful.
