Zoologisches Museum

Forty five minutes at the zoological museum. Attempted again the mammut. I like this museum, a lot of interesting things to draw.

Rabbit

Weak points for me are definitely the animals. I attempted a rabbit table decoration.

Will definitely continue working on this. Had more time for the drill today.

Had no access to scanner today, had to use my phone to capture the pic.

1929 car

I spent an hour at the automobile building of the Swiss Transport Museum. Cars are presented on the walls, this make some awkward perspective. This is the only decent sketch I could manage. I had forgotten how difficult cars are to draw.

Plants

Succulent plants page of the week. I used the viewfinder again. It helped choosing the shot.

Drill front, two pages of boxes.

Pencil Sharpener

This is an old school pen sharpener. Very heavy and very expensive. But you can have the blades re-sharpened for free and it last forever. At least that's what I have been told. I completely miss the sketch tough.

On the drill front, I tried again a page of sphere construction. Not very happy about. Was a bit careless on it. I hope I can nail it before the figure drawing course starts.

Farm Thumbnail

Main view from the living room is this farm. I built an homemade viewfinder to help me setup the shot. It's just a thumbnail but I am happy with the result.

By the way, it's the 101st post today. Never missed a day so far. Let's see how long I can maintain it :)

Recovery sketches

Feeling better. Sketched what was on my desk.

Line is a bit hesitant but that's better than the last two days. On the drill front, I did one page of cylinder construction and one page of vehicle box.

Tetris Drill

Still battling with the flu. This drill page was the only thing I could do.

Plastic Bottles

Had planned a visit to Luzern but I have the flu and have to stay in bed. Here is the only thing I could manage

Bird "gestures"

Half an hour at the voliere trying to sketch the usual suspects, hornbills and toucans.

Got a cold,  so direct to bed, no drill page!

Figure Drawing

Went to a figure drawing session tonight. Did only 45 minutes. Here is the last pose I did.

I have to say I am quite happy with it. If I compare with the sessions I did last year, it's an improvement. I feel I have a better grasp of the body perspective :)

New Holland Toy Tractor

I really have issue with tractors. Very difficult to construct properly ;)

Binoculars

Very small update today. Just a very quick sketch of binoculars (just received them, apparently you can do closeup of insects with them..quite handy)

Epiphyte Plants

Went to the Ephyte section at the Sukkulenten Sammlung (An epiphyte is a plant that grows upon another plant ) . Very wet sketching conditions.  Most plants sketched were hanging high. It exercised this kind of perspective I am struggling with.

Drill today was about sphere. Preparation for human head drawing. Quite challenging ;)

Excavator

Short sketch of an excavator on a mound. Will need to work on the arm.  Challenging!

On the drill side, box in perspective again.

Front Loader Toy

Toy front loader today. From the Siku brand. It looked terrible when I was doing the construction of the bottom one, but suddenly I connected the dots and the front loader appeared!

I have decided to do more basic exercises from now on. Since this blog is about the process of learning, I will also post them beside my regular daily sketch. Here is the first one. Drawing boxes in perspective. but with a perspective I encounter a lot when I draw large vehicles/trains. I have a lot of trouble drawing the "hidden" side of the boxes (needed for the construction).  Hope this will help.

Doodling in the car

Sitting in my car, waiting for the bjj lesson to start, I doodled what I saw in my car. Was relaxing just drawing simple 2d stuff.

Toucans Again

I had to go back to the Voliere today. Had forgotten my stool. So I did again quick poses of the toucans.

Toucan and Hornbill shapes

At the voliere today doodled the toucan couple and the crowned hornbill. Still doesn't look very good but I feel I made progress understanding how to simplify the head.

Succulent Plant Flowers

Focused on flowers today! Leafs are tricky!

Construction Site Vehicle

On the side of the road, there was this vehicle. Had only 15 minutes for this so. Looking at it now, the side view is completely off but the front/side views have better proportions.

Coca Cola Toy Truck

Quick thumbnails for a Coke truck.

Toy Mixer

Struggled with Fokker biplan thumbnails. But after one hour of struggle, cut my loss and did this quick toy "mixer" (not sur about the translation). Hope tomorrow will be a better day ;)

Fokker D. VII

I found a very nice toy line of cheap WW1 planes.  Bought one and tried to fill a page of thumbnails with it.  Well, all I can say is, biplane are hard. Will go back to it next week.

Skeletons thumbnails

No much time today. I sneaked into the natural history museum and sketched a cat and the mammut skeleton. I feel better about the body of the mammut. Next time I will try to get the head/body proportions a bit more correct.

Liberia Masks

Show depot at the Rietberg today. Very interesting shapes with these masks.

1887 Fountain

Was on my bike en route for the Succulent Plant collection when I saw this fountain. Was looking for an easy sketch. But it was much more difficult than I expected (as always). Proportions were hard.

Locomotives and Numbers

Usual visit a the Verkhershaus today. Had fun with drawing the numbers painted on some locomotives. 

Small Excavator

A toy excavator on wheels, straight from the personal collection of you know why. Had issues with the arm :)

Lindt Sprüngli Giant Rabbit

Not a pleasant experience sketching this giant (2 meter high) golden easter rabbit at the shopping center.   Couldn't find the right approach, and I cannot use the good ole 'it was moving' excuse!
